LLAIS was established in March 2006 and funded by the Welsh Assembly Government through WORD to:
- Ensure that health and social care research takes full acount of the bilingual context of Wales and its speakers
- Enhance the evidence base for language appropriate practice and policy.
Within its newly commissioned role in NISCHR in 2010, LLAIS works towards ensuring that health and social care research in Wales is responsive to the needs of Welsh speakers. Whilst this approach embodies the new legislative and statutory framework for the delivery of Welsh language services in the public sector, it also provides a means of enhancing the validity of research findings in the bilingual setting; and strengthening the impact of these findings on policy and service provision for a bilingual Wales.
With the establishment of NISCHR CRC, new opportunities have arisen to channel efforts to embed language awareness in health and social care research for the bilingual context. LLAIS adopts a central role in these developments, through aligning closely with the work of NISCHR CRC and actively contributing towards supporting excellence within people focussed research studies.
